Buy the truth and sell it not. Prov. 23:23

Baptism is a Burial

and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,
in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

This verse is very important for everyone, because it is warning us that we are in danger of having God's wrath upon us if we do not do something which it says we must do. It says we must "obey the gospel". The first several times I heard of this expression I was bewildered. This was a new expression for me. I needed to find out exactly what that meant, as I most assuredly did not desire to come under the wrath of the Almighty God. With a little bit of study of the scriptures, the meaning was made apparent and soon became quite obvious to me. I knew by my study that I had not done what was necessary to avoid God's wrath upon me, and so I determined in my mind that I needed to do something about becoming right with God, and that this could only happen when I was willing to submit to doing His will.

The first question that comes to mind when reading this passage is, "What is the gospel?" We must go to other passages to find the answer to that question:

It is the power unto salvation (it can save us):

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. Romans 1:16

It is that Christ died, was buried and was resurrected:
"Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures," 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
As we can see from 1Cor 15:1-4 above:
- Paul preached it
- They received it (believed it)
- They stand in it (practice and uphold it)
- They are saved by it (IF they continue in it)

taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Notice again, that 2 Thess. 1:7-9 says if we want to avoid God's vengeance we must "obey" the gospel. And if the gospel is the death, burial and resurrection, as we have seen already, then how is it that we "obey" that?

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, Romans 6:3-5

Now it is becoming more clear. We must be baptized into His death! This verse says that we are buried with Him through baptism. And then, just as Christ was raised from the dead, we also are raised to walk in newness of life after we are baptized. It is absolutely essential that our baptism involves a death and a burial and a resurrection. We must die to our sins, be buried into His death (His death is where His blood was shed) and we rise (are resurrected) a new creature, free from sin.
But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. Romans 6:17-18
Paul says that the saints in Rome had obeyed a form of doctrine which he had delived to them.
What had he delivered to them? He delivered unto them the gospel of Christ. What did we say the gospel of Christ was? It was the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Greek word translated "form" is "tupos," meaning example, fashion, figure, form, manner, pattern, print.

So, he says that they had obeyed a pattern of doctrine, a like-figure, a manner of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection. How did they obey it? They were baptized - immersed into His death! Now we can see the connection.
What Is So Important About Being Buried With Him?

Jesus is a propitiation for our sins:
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: ...
1 John 4:10 ... and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
He shed His blood for us, for the forgiveness of our sins:
Revelation 1:5 ... Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
The water of baptism covers our sins:
Romans 4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Baptism is for the remission of sins:
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

We must have contact with the blood if we are to receive remission of our sins:
Hebrews 9:22 ... and without shedding of blood is no remission.
We contact the blood that was shed for us by being buried with Christ, which is where His precious blood was shed. When we are buried with Him, we go under the water, which is the representation of His blood, and His blood covers our sin, and washes us clean.
